If your children want to learn some entrepreneurial skills, it’s not hard to let them go for it now days. Especially with the internet. There are places like Zazzle, Craig’s List, eBay and yes – even blogging.
Our boys have already tried a lemonade stand…
also Craig’s list – and I must admit, they didn’t do too bad! They made around $25.00 each on the lemonade stand, and probably over $150 to split up from Craig’s list. Of course mom has to help with a lot for now, but if they keep it up – they’ll be making good money before they even think about college.
Today – we set them up their own simple WordPress websites. The oldest who just turned 10 has his website at www.brandenmckee.com
The youngest has his at www.michaelmckee.name (we used .name because we couldn’t get the .com)
Branden’s goal is to make around $600.00 bucks so he can buy an iPad. Michael wants to earn $100.00 for an XBox game that includes some kind of fishing pole device. We think it would be a great to teach the boys how to sell things online, because it involves so much “school work” without really seeming like it.
Neither one of them have any issues with making money here at home. We pay them for chores, give them an allowance, and they are quite happy to pay for their own items. Their math skills are pretty dang good, because they have been dealing with money for years. They know how to bargain shop!
Now that we have their websites up, we’ll need to post ads on Craig’s List first. They each have a box of things they want to sell. If they can’t sell them on Craig’s List we’ll try eBay. If they don’t sell anywhere they may have to be donated locally, but learning how to donate is a good thing!
There is also a website called “Zazzle” that we already have an account with. I’ve sold some shoes, some stamps – but never really made much else. Mostly I created some things just to check out how the website works.
Both boys were completely interested in Zazzle – so it looks like we may be creating some new items! Whatever they decide to create can be linked on their own websites. Michael has been asking “can we work on my website” since it went live, so he’s definitely ready to earn some cash!
We’ll keep you posted on how it goes!
Thanks!
